Do I need to be able to swim to participate in a scuba diving activity?
For a discovery dive or introductory program, you do not necessarily need to be a strong swimmer, as you will wear a buoyancy control device to manage your position in the water under the constant supervision of an instructor. However, for any certification course, such as an Open Water license, you must demonstrate basic swimming ability and the capacity to float or tread water for a specific duration to meet safety standards. Even for beginners, you should feel comfortable in the water and have no fear of being submerged.
